Chapter One: Introduction

The History of Medical Marijuana

Cannabis has been used as medicinal and mood-altering plant, dating back to 7000 B.C.E. of what is now known to be Northern China.  There is further evidence that has shown cannabis used for healing purposes in the 2000s B.C.E. China as well.  Continuing to early B.C.E., researchers have discovered other societies using this type of treatment:
  •  Egyptians used cannabis for glaucoma, inflammation and enemas.
  •  Indians used it as anesthesia and as a cure for Leprosy.
  •  Ancient Greece used marijuana for earaches, edema and inflammation.

Written in 1 A.D., an ancient Chinese text even recommended marijuana for more than 100 ailments.  Scientists have found numerous other civilizations that have documented their therapeutic uses of cannabis

It wasn’t until the late 1930s that the United States Federal Government disagreed with the therapeutic, industrial and recreational usages of marijuana, therefore passing the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937.  The government later decided that cannabinoids (the organic makeup of marijuana) are a Schedule 1 substance under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970.  In 2011 the Obama Administration decided it was in the lawmakers best interest to reassess the title of being a controlled substance, which has lead us to the medical application of medicinal marijuana, and the opening of many dispensaries.  Today, there are over 20,000 peer-reviewed articles related to this topic, more than half of which have been published in the last five years.

The Breakdown of Psychological Disorders

A psychological disorder is an array of both psychological and behavioral symptoms that can create distress or impact multiple life areas of the person facing them.  In order to diagnose a patient with a specific disorder, psychologists need to follow the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.  Through this manual, psychologists study cognitive thought, emotional state, social processes and human behavior through observation and interpretation.  The highlighted disorders include:
  •   Eating disorders
  •  Mood disorders
  •  Somatoform disorders
  •  Sleep disorders
  •  Anxiety disorders
  •  Personality disorders

Two of the main ways to treat mental illness are psychotherapy, also known as mental health counseling, and pharmacotherapy, with the use of psychiatric medication.  Most psychologists agree that the use of both types of therapy, simultaneously, generate the best outcomes.  Focusing on pharmacotherapy, this type of treatment uses medication to decrease the severity of the stresses and impacts of psychological disorders.  Recently, researchers have used the knowledge of medical marijuana in brain function to develop possible treatment with cannabis.
